Sailors and Metro workers support pension action
8 March 2012
The RMT transport union has pledged support for the proposed day of action over public sector pensions on Wednesday, 28 March.Workers at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary - who are covered by the civil service pension scheme - and the Tyne and Wear Metro - who are in the local government pension scheme - took part in the co-ordinated national strike last November. A spokesman for RMT said: "We will follow the other unions and take part in the action on 28 March if it goes ahead."
PCS, and several other organisations, are holding consultative ballots for action over changes to pensions that leave public servants paying much larger contributions, and working up to eight years longer, for thousands of pounds less in payouts when they are retired.
In a separate dispute RMT members who work for the company that maintains and upgrades three London underground lines are balloting for action over pensions and concessionary travel.
Tube Lines is owned by Transport for London - but staff are not allowed to join the parent company's pension scheme, and do not receive the same concessionary fares as colleagues in the rest of the business.
