Background information:
If this Bill becomes law, what we will witness over the next decade is:
- the increasing takeover of NHS services by private, for-profit companies;
- a significant reduction in the services available as part of the NHS;
- top up charges for services currently received as part of the NHS;
- an increasing need for supplementary health insurance.
In short, this Bill is paving the way for a commercial, insurance-based system of health care

All this will be possible because the fundamental principle at the heart of this Bill is to remove the legal duty on the State to provide comprehensive health services - free at the point of delivery and funded by taxes - to everyone who needs them [http://bit.ly/zg9rLI]. In other words this is a Bill to ‘denationalise’the NHS.

Despite what you are hearing in the press, the Bill is making its way through the Lords largely
unaltered [http://bit.ly/mBBCG4].
Consequently, it is now down to us - the health professionals - to stand together and protect the NHS by withdrawing support for this Bill [http://bit.ly/wQk41g]. It is vital that the professional bodies listen to their members, despite direct pressure from Lansley and Cameron to be silent.
This Bill must not be allowed to become law. In practical terms, if the Bill were withdrawn, it would be possible to work with the new structures that have already come into existence.
